The State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) Deputy Director Huang Liuquan said during a press conference in Beijing yesterday that at the request of the Macau government, the central authorities will actively study and carry out a series of policy measures to support the development of tourism in Macau and accelerate the construction of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
According to Huang, the central authorities have always attached great importance to and made unremitting efforts to promote the appropriate diversification of Macau’s economy. In recent years, Huang said, although Macau has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020 and faced some difficulties and challenges in its economy and civil society, the fundamentals of economic development have not changed, adding he believed that with the strong support of the central authorities, Macau will make better use of its unique advantages and continue to make new achievements in developing its economy and improving people’s livelihoods.
Huang noted that the emerging industries in Macau, such as Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions (MICE), Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Characteristic Finance and Cultural Innovation account for a growing share of Macau’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), adding that the strategic positioning of “One Centre, One Platform and One Base” has been steadily implemented.
Since the 18th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress in 2012, the party has actively responded to changes in both Hong Kong and Macau internal and external environments and pushed for historic achievements and changes in the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong and Macau, Huang said, adding that the “One Centre, One Platform and One Base” has opened up new horizons and improved the system, so that Hong Kong and Macau have maintained a sound situation of prosperity and stability, and accelerated their integration into the nation’s overall development.
