A local man died yesterday after falling from the rooftop of a high-rise building near the Barrier Gate border checkpoint where he lived, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement.

The statement identified the man as a 26-year-old surnamed Chao.

The Fire Services Bureau (CB) transferred the case to the Judiciary Police for follow-up investigation at 10:20 a.m. yesterday, the statement said.

According to the statement, the man was found lying on the building’s podium on the second floor yesterday morning, after which he was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre where he was pronounced dead after emergency treatment to save his life had failed.

A CB statement yesterday identified the building as Block 3 of the Sun Star Plaza residential estate in Avenida do Hipódromo.

According to yesterday’s PJ statement, initial examinations showed that the man had no injuries that could have been caused by foul play, and neither had he any suspicious injuries.

The examinations also showed that the man sustained injuries that were caused by “falling from a height”.

According to the statement, the man’s elder brother told PJ officers that the 26-year-old lived with his family members in a flat in the building.

The 26-year-old showed “no abnormalities” when having dinner with his family members on Wednesday night, the statement said, adding that he returned to his bedroom after the dinner.

According to the statement, the elder brother only realised that his younger brother had “fallen” from the building when police officers went to his flat to question him at around 11 a.m. yesterday.

The elder brother told the PJ officers that a pair of slippers found on the building’s rooftop belonged to his younger brother.

No suicide note was found at the scene, the statement said.
