The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) urged residents in a statement last Friday to beware of snakes when hiking.
The statement said that when residents encounter snakes in the hills, they should remain calm and not frighten the snakes which usually bluff a defensive posture under threat. The statement said that residents should leave the scene quietly and avoid hitting or even killing the snakes.
If bitten, people should stay calm and keep a distance from the snake, after which they should record the time of the bite and the appearance of the snake, the statement said, adding that they should call 999 immediately, avoid strenuous activities, and seek assistance.
The statement added that residents should wear headgear, ankle-covering footwear, and long sleeves and trousers, as well as other protective gear to avoid getting bitten.
