A local man was arrested for taking a person’s phone that had been left on an ATM, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Leong said that the 51-year-old suspect surnamed Chan is a renovation worker.

Leong said that on September 3 the victim reported to the police that he or she forgot to pick up their phone worth 10,000 patacas after withdrawing cash from an ATM on Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen. When the victim returned almost immediately, the phone was gone.

According to Leong, after scrutinising their CCTV city wide camera system, the police identified Chan as the person who had taken the phone. Chan was arrested yesterday morning in his flat in Taipa. He admitted stealing the phone out of greed, and said that he had already sold the phone for 4,200 yuan (4,735 patacas) in the mainland.

Chan has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft-by-finding charge, according to Leong.
