Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said in a statement yesterday that a fire broke out in the freezer room of a supermarket on Avenida Olímpica in Taipa at 8:52 a.m. yesterday.

According to the statement, no one was injured or required hospitalisation in the suspected arson.

The statement noted that yesterday morning supermarket staff members saw smoke coming out of the freezer room, but they mistook it for kitchen fumes from a nearby restaurant, so initially they did not call the police. However, they later discovered that cardboard placed near the door of the room inside the supermarket had caught fire, so they immediately put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

The statement said that police officers called to the scene found a cigarette end by the door to the street where the fire had started, believing that it was related to the incident.

The person in charge of the supermarket told the police that no financial losses resulted from the fire, adding that, nevertheless, the supermarket has decided take legal action, according to the statement.

The Judiciary Police have classified the case as suspected arson.
