The observatory hoisted the Strong Monsoon Signal at 11 p.m. yesterday to replace Tropical Cyclone Signal No.3 which had been issued at 4:30 p.m. on Monday as Typhoon “Nesat’’ moved further away from Macau.
The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said on its website that at 11 p.m. Nesat was located about 530 km south-southwest of Macau, moving towards the coast of Vietnam.
The bureau pointed out that as Nesat was moving south-south-westward, its influence on Macau was diminishing gradually. However, the observatory said it expected Macau to be affected by a northeast monsoon with winds reaching Force 6 and gusty today.
As the winds over the bridges were expected to be strong and gusty, the bureau urged drivers to pay close attention to traffic safety, adding that motorcyclists should travel between the Peninsula and Taipa in the motorcycle lane on Sai Van Bridge.
Due to strong wind and swells, slight flooding may occur in the southern Inner Harbour area between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. today.
Under the influence of Nesat, kindergarten, primary school and special education classes were suspended yesterday for the whole day.
Meanwhile, the weather station said it expected today’s weather to be cloudy with a few showers, adding that today’s temperature was forecast to reach a low of 16 degrees Celsius. It advised residents to be aware of the cold and wear more clothes.
