A 90-year-old local man was arrested last month for stealing three mobile phones from taxi drivers, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Kam, a cabbie parked his or her taxi in Avenida da Concórdia in the northern district without locking it at the change of shift in the wee hours of August 20. Later, the taxi driver discovered that his or her mobile phone that he or she had left in the taxi had gone.
The victim reported the incident to the police on August 24, after which police scrutinised their citywide CCTV camera system and identified the suspect, surnamed Chan, Kam said. Chan was arrested in his flat on September 23.
During investigation, the police also found that Chan had stolen two mobile phones from two taxi drivers in July and August respectively. Chan admitted randomly looting parked taxis at night in Fai Chi Kei and Ilha Verde districts but did not explain why. The three stolen mobile phones, plus one which Chan claimed he had picked up in the street, were retrieved in his flat.
Chan has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, Kam said.
