A local man, whose 72-year-old father has complained to the police multiple times that he was beaten by him, was arrested for striking his dad with a dustpan on Saturday, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Lou said that the 34-year-old local suspect surnamed Loi lives with his parents in the city centre. His father is retired.

According to Lou, since Loi lost his job in 2019 he has become increasingly irritable and has beaten his father at least eight times since then over his father coughing and being noisy while cooking. Lou added that on one occasion Loi hit his father on the jaw with a cup after which he had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Lou added that Loi’s father had previously reported five of the incidents to the Public Security Police (PSP), but the “soft-hearted” dad had not held his son accountable for the any of the previous domestic violence cases.

According to Lou, when his father questioned Loi why he had broken some dishes for apparently no reason in the kitchen on Saturday, Loi suddenly got emotional, grabbed a dustpan and swung it at the back of his father’s head, leading to a laceration.

Loi’s father fled the scene immediately, fearing that his life was being threatened by his increasingly violent son. He finally decided that he did not want to live with his son anymore, so he sought help from the police.

Under questioning, Loi admitted striking his father with a dustpan, adding that he did not feel remorseful because his father had “provoked” him first.

Loi was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday morning, facing a charge of domestic violence, Lou said.
