Young people should “inherit and carry forward” the spirit of the May 4th Movement, Tommy He Zhaodong, a vice-director general of the University of Macau Students’ Union (UMSU), said yesterday, adding that they should bear in mind “the lessons of history and the era”.
The student leader made the remarks when addressing the opening ceremony of the group’s three-day “UMSU May 4th Youth Leadership Summit Series” activity commemorating the historic movement in 1919, at the university on Hengqin.
The May 4th Movement began with mass student protests, especially in Beijing, on May 4 in 1919 against the Chinese government’s response to the Treaty of Versailles that imposed unfair treaties on China and undermined the country’s sovereignty, according to Xinhua.
