CEM hosts ‘Clean Energy City Challenge’

CEM has hosted the “Clean Energy City Challenge” with the aim of strengthening students’ interest in environmental protection and clean energy use, as well as to celebrate CEM’s 50th anniversary, the power utility said in a statement yesterday. 

The event, the statement noted, was recently organised in conjunction with the Macau Science Centre (MSC) with the technical support of Science & Technology Promotion Association. Over 300 students and more than 50 teams representing 23 local secondary schools participated in the event. 

The statement did not say when exactly the event took place. 

According to the statement, the top 20 teams from two categories – Environment & Energy Conservation for Form 1-Form 3 students and Clean Energies & Technology for Form 4 to Form 6 students – were selected by a panel of judges.

The shortlisted students, the statement said, were challenged to build a model, with the projects exhibited at the MSC from October 22-30. The teams competed for the final awards during the exhibition, with the results based on 70 percent professional judging and 30 percent public voting. The statement pointed out that nearly 10,000 public votes were received.

The statement said that the top three winning schools for the Environment & Energy Conservation category were the champion Escola Choi Nong Chi Tai, followed by 1st runner-up Sacred Heart School – English Section and 2nd runner-up Yuet Wah College– English Section.  The winning team of the “My Favourite Eco Project” category, as chosen by members of the public, was Sacred Heart School – English Section.

Meanwhile, the top three winning schools for the Clean Energies & Technology category was championed by Escola Choi Nong Chi Tai, while St Paul’s School and Sacred Heart School – English Section respectively won 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up. Sacred Heart School – English Section also won the “My Favourite Eco Project” in this category. 

The statement underlined that all winning teams received trophies and cash prizes, ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 patacas. Several schools were also able to make it to the top 10 in their respective categories, the statement added.
