Macau Int’l Short Film Festival slated for early next month

The Macau International Short Film Festival is slated to take place at Teatro Capitol on Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva from December 1-8, with over 30 screening sessions of fiction, documentaries, animations and music videos, the organisers said in a statement yesterday.

The statement noted that 129 films and music videos will be presented throughout the festival, while the list of films selected from the international competition has also been announced.

According to the statement, 4,172 short films and videos from 123 countries and regions were submitted through the International Short Film Competition – SHORTS and International Music Video Competition – VOLUME.

The festival’s complete programme will be available online at www.MacauInternationalShortFilmFestival.com on November 7, the statement said.

Festival Director Lúcia Lemos was quoted in the statement as saying that the festival “helps film lovers to get to know the current world fiction, documentaries, and animations.” She added that the annual festival “allows the broadening of knowledge of other techniques, shares other realities, and brings directors and other professionals together for future partnerships.”

The statement noted that the festival will screen films from places such as  Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Macau, Portugal, Macedonia, Mexico, Poland, the Philippines, and Spain.  Moreover, continuing to showcase the trend in evolving female film directors worldwide, 32 out of the 111 films selected are from female directors, or nearly 29 percent.

The statement underlined that the award-winners will be announced on December 8 from the Official Selection and will be given awards and cash prizes worth 84,000 patacas. Awards include the Best Film of the Festival, Best Fiction and Best Documentary. There are also Prestigious Awards such as Best Director and Best Cinematography in SHORTS, and Best Song and Best Visual Effects in VOLUME.

Moreover, there are also two awards tailored for short films related to Macau, which are Best Local Entry and Macau Cultural Identity, the statement said.

The festival will also present two Masterclasses, where professional guest-speakers from the film industry and TV Broadcasting are invited to share their experiences in filmmaking. There will also be invited films in four EXPANDED CINEMA sessions, from Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Kazakhstan, among others.
