Gaming resort operator Sands China said in a statement this week said that it was recognised by the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Business Sustainability Indices (BSI), earning rankings in four of its indices.

The CUHK Business School launched the BSI in 2015 to “promote business practices that contribute to a positive social and environmental impact”. The BSI examined the sustainability performance of 285 companies across 12 industries “based on their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) performance in 2020”, and the results were announced in September.

Among the rankings earned is a Top 10 ranking in the 2nd Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI), adding that it was also named a pace-setter in the category. Sands China, the statement said, is one of only two companies out of 38 in the Hotel BSI that performed at the pace-setter level, “the highest level awarded in the category this year”, the statement said.

The rating, the statement added, is only awarded to companies whose social responsibility performance has been “substantially above average”, noting that this means that Sands has built a “mature socially responsible management system and adopts a comprehensive business sustainability approach”.

Sands China resort operations Senior Vice President Sean McCreery was quoted in the statement as saying that “environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility are guiding principles for Sands China, and we strive to put them into practice in all areas of our business”, adding that Sands is “proud of our team members for supporting and successfully implementing those principles day-to-day and on the ground.”

The other indices that Sands China ranked in is being the only integrated resort or hotel operator placing in the following: the Top 20 in the 2nd Greater China Business Sustainability Index (GCBSI); 9th in the Top 10 of the 3rd Greater Bay Area Business Sustainability Index (GBABSI); and 9th in the 7th Hong Kong Business Sustainability Index (HKBSI) Top 10.

Moreover, the statement said that Sands China also recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Macau Fair & Trade Association (MFTA), marking their joint commitment to promote and strengthen Macau’s MICE industry’s sustainable development, representing its commitment to delivering carbon neutral exhibition venues and supporting the government’s net zero emissions target.
