China Telecom (Macau) Company Limited, which has been granted a 5G licence by the local government, announced in a statement yesterday that it expects to start its 5G service in the city before the end of this year.

The statement pledged that China Telecom (Macau) will develop various 5G applications in the city that are conducive to Macau’s social development and offers residents more convenience in their daily lives and entertainment, by making full use of the extensive experience of its parent company, China Telecom, in running a 5G service in the mainland.

The Macau government announced on Monday that two telecom operators, CTM and China Telecom (Macau), have each been granted a 5G licence.

CTM announced in a press conference on Monday that it expects to start its 5G service on Monday next week. However, no details about its 5G service plans and fees were announced during the press conference.

The government launched a public tender earlier this year for the granting of up to four 5G licences. However, the government had only received two bids before the tender’s submission deadline, by CTM and China Telecom (Macau). Both are among the city’s current four telecom operators that are running 4G services. Both bids were accepted.

The two 5G licences will have a duration of eight years.

Yesterday’s statement by China Telecom (Macau) announced no details of the company’s 5G service plans and fees either.

Yesterday’s statement also underlined that China Telecom (Macau) had already commenced building its 5G network in the city before it was granted a 5G licence on Monday.

Both CTM and China Telecom (Macau) have noted that 5G customers will be able to use the 5G service with an Android 5G smartphone, i.e., a smartphone that uses an Android operating system and supports 5G, once they start their respective 5G services, but those with an iPhone, i.e., an iOS operating system, will only be able to enjoy the 5G service next quarter at the earliest.
