Rubbish left in a gap behind a CEM transformer box caught fire yesterday afternoon in a suspected arson attack, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement.

According to the statement, a resident saw white smoke emerging from rubbish including pieces of paper behind a transformer box outside a shop on Estrada Governador Albano de Oliveira at 3:22 p.m.

The resident then removed the rubbish and found that it was scorched and thus informed the Fire Services Bureau (CB), which considered the fire suspicious when they arrived at the scene later on and reported the case to the Judiciary Police.

The statement said that police officers then searched the burnt rubbish at the scene and found several cigarette ends near the box. The case has been transferred to the arson section of the Judiciary Police.

No one was injured in the incident, and no property damage had been reported by the power utility at the time of the statement.
