A taxi driver was arrested for fatally injuring a male pedestrian in his sixties when he was walking across a zebra crossing on Monday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Cheang is in his sixties, while the male victim and his wife, who is in her sixties, sustained injuries in the accident.
According to Lai, when the couple were walking over the zebra crossing in Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus in Cotai on Monday at 10 a.m., Cheang, with passengers on board, failed to slow down and stop to give way to the elderly couple.
Lai underlined that the husband was critically injured, while his wife sustained injuries all over her body including two bone fractures. They were rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre (CHCSJ) for emergency treatment.
The male victim was pronounced dead early yesterday morning, Lai noted.
The cabbie passed a breathalyser test. Under questioning, Cheang claimed that the couple had “dashed” onto the zebra crossing and therefore could not stop the taxi in time.
Cheang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of homicide by negligence, Lai said.
