‘Mermaids’ to urge people not to eat fish

A pair of activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia will be dressed like mermaids today in the city’s main square, Largo do Senado, to urge people not to eat fish.

The animal protection group said in a statement yesterday that the “mermaids” would be around the square’s fountain at midday, holding signs reading “Fishing Hurts”.

“When it comes to feeling pain and having a will to live, fish are just like all other animals – including humans,” the statement said, quoting Ashley Fruno, who will be one of the “mermaids” at the event today.
