A local man has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for beating his 10-year-old son with a coat hanger last Tuesday, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said during a regular press conference on Friday.
The 33-year-old suspect surnamed Ng, who lives with his son and wife in a flat in the city centre, told the police that he works as a casino dealer.
According to Lou, the paediatric emergency department of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre notified the Judiciary Police of a suspected domestic violence case on November 15 in which the victim was taken to the public hospital for treatment after he was found to have several “recent” and “old” bruises on his body by his teacher when he went to school as usual last Wednesday.
Lou said the Judiciary Police contacted Ng for questioning. Ng admitted that he had beaten his son after he knew that he did not have lunch at school as usual last Tuesday, adding that as he felt it was a serious matter that his son had lied to the school and left the campus without permission, he beat his son “many times” with a coat hanger on that day.
Ng also told the police that he had punished his son “with his hands” due to problems with his discipline and school work since he was six years old. He also acknowledged that he had recently switched to using a coat hanger when beating his son.
Upon examination, Lou pointed out, the boy’s body had a mixture of recent and old bruises, adding the Judiciary Police believed that he had been punished at least twice with a coat hanger.
Lou said that as Ng’s corporal punishment of his son had continued for a considerable time, and the level of violence had got worse, he has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office, facing a domestic violence charge.
