A non-resident worker (NRW) from the mainland stole a phone left in the fairing pocket of a motorcycle, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said at a press conference yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Liu, is in his forties working as a labourer, Wong said.

According to Wong, a woman reported to the police on Wednesday that earlier that day she forgot her phone, worth 7,000 patacas, in the front-fairing pocket of her motorcycle in Rua Quatro do Bairro Iao Hon, and when she returned for it 10 minutes later it was gone. The police identified Liu based on CCTV footage and arrested him in Iao Han district on Thursday morning.

Under questioning, Liu said that he was attracted by the ringing of the victim’s phone, went to take a look and then stole it in a moment of greed.

Liu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, Wong said.
