A taxi driver was arrested for critically injuring a male pedestrian in his thirties who was walking across a zebra crossing on Thursday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said at a press conference yesterday.

Wong said the 32-year-old suspect surnamed Sou told the police that he has worked as a taxi driver for seven years. Wong said that the victim was still in coma at the time of the press conference.

According to Wong, when the victim was walking across a zebra crossing near the Olympic Sports Centre in Taipa, Sou, who was speeding to overtake a car, failed to slow down and stop to give way to the pedestrian.

Wong underlined that Sou was on the chevrons when he was overtaking.

CCTV footage from the taxi also showed that Sou had been speeding twice earlier that day, reaching 80 km/h, and was not wearing a seatbelt.

Sou has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of dangerous driving and causing bodily harm by negligence, Wong said.
