The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that it has been treating an ailing banyan tree in Avenida da Praia Grande’s road verge near Clube Militar.
According to the statement, the tree was found to have developed wormholes on the surface of its trunk, with some of its bark being parched and necrotic.
The statement pointed out that the tree was found to have had sparse crown leaves since May 2019, one of the lower thick branches had abnormal longitudinal cracks and borer holes on the surface. Following the treatment carried out by IAM arborists, the statement added, the tree’s condition has improved year by year.
However, the statement noted, during a recent review, necrosis was partially found in the tree’s trunk.
Necrosis in trees is the localised death of cells or tissues through injury or disease.
The bureau said that it has continuously monitored the tree’s condition, while taking timely care of it.
The bureau urged members of the public to protect the city’s precious tree resources, adding that if any abnormalities are found in trees, they should contact the bureau through its “Municipal Online” app or by calling the IAM hotline on 2833 7676.
