The Judiciary Police (PJ) were notified by the Public Security Police (PSP) at 12:08 a.m. yesterday that a 96-year-old local woman, believed to “have fallen from a height” from a building on Rua de Tai Lin in Taipa, landed on a male passer-by, and both were rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment, a PJ spokesperson said in a statement.

According to the statement, the Judiciary Police were informed by the public hospital that the nonagenarian, surnamed Kuok, was certified dead after emergency treatment, while the pedestrian, who was waiting for a friend in the street, sustained facial abrasions and chest fractures.

The statement said that Kuok, who lived alone in a flat on the ninth floor of the building, had been ill, adding the Judiciary Police believed that the victim “had fallen from the window of the flat’s bedroom.”

A preliminary examination of the body showed that the injuries were consistent with a fall from a height, according to the statement, which noted that there were no suspected criminal injuries on the body.

The statement said that a suicide note was found at the scene.

The police have classified the case as a dead body found, the statement pointed out, adding that the exact cause of death could only be confirmed after a forensic examination.
