In view of the Yellow cold weather alert issued by the local observatory yesterday, the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) has opened its winter shelter in the E1 Bairro da Ilha Verde Building at 34 Rua Leste da Ilha Verde, until the mercury rises again, according to an IAS statement yesterday.

Blankets, food and drinks will be provided for those seeking shelter from the cold, the statement added.

It’s the first time this winter that the cold-weather shelter opens its doors.

In order to follow the government’s COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures, the statement underlined, members of the public will be required to present a negative rapid antigen test (RAT) valid for the day or a negative nucleic acid test (NAT) result valid for 24 hours, before entering the shelter.

Users of the shelter must show their “Macau Health Code” after scanning the venue QR code at the facility, while undergoing a temperature check and wearing a facemask while at the shelter, the statement noted, which added that those seeking shelter in the facility will also be required to abide by its novel coronavirus prevention requirements.

The bureau urged members of the public to pay close attention to the health conditions of senior citizens, of those living alone and all those who suffer from chronic diseases or are in frail health, and to take appropriate precautions against the cold weather.

Enquiries can be made by calling 28270939 during office hours or 63991963 during non-office hours.

The observatory predicated that the Yellow cold weather warning, which was issued yesterday, will remain in force until at least tomorrow. The weather station said that the mercury was expected to drop to 12°C or even below today and tomorrow.
