The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) said in a recent statement that its Rector Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan was in Rome to attend the Executive and Administrative Board of the International Federation of Catholic Universities where he, along with representatives from regional associations of Catholic universities worldwide, also met with the Vatican’s Head of Culture and Education, Cardinal Tolentino Mendonça.
Prof. Morgan, who is also a vice president of the board, was in Rome from November 28 to December 1. The representatives met to discuss the challenges facing universities and how the global network of Catholic universities could respond to some of them, according to the statement.
Meanwhile, the statement added that Cardinal Mendonça is “very familiar with USJ” as he signed the original agreement covering philosophical and theological education, as well as research between USJ and the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) in Lisbon, where he was a previous vice rector.
The statement noted that Cardinal Mendonça also “expressed to Rector Morgan the importance of USJ to the Pope and the entire global church, as being a place where the academic dialogue between the Catholic Church and the universities in the Peoples Republic of China could grow and thrive”.
