Macau to follow national memorial meeting for Jiang tomorrow

The Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement on Saturday that in order for people in Macau to be able to express their deep condolences for the passing of former president Jiang Zemin, the local government and local people will follow a national memorial meeting which will be held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing commencing at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

According to the statement, the memorial meeting will be broadcast live on the television and radio channels of public broadcaster TDM.

The statement said that the principal officials of the local government, members of the Executive Council, lawmakers and representatives of the Judiciary will stand and observe a three-minute silent tribute tomorrow morning as a mark of respect during the memorial meeting. At the same time, all government vehicles and vessels will honk their horns for three minutes, the statement added.

The statement underlined that government officials will not attend any public entertainment activities tomorrow, while all entertainment and celebratory activities organised or funded by the government will be suspended.

The government urged community associations, other organisations and people from all walks of life to suspend all entertainment and celebratory activities tomorrow, and to organise their staff members to watch the memorial meeting in the national capital and participate in the mourning.

The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) will coordinate with all tertiary education institutions, primary and secondary schools, as well as kindergartens to fly the national flag at half-mast and suspend all celebrations tomorrow, according to the statement.

The government also urged schools to arrange for their teachers and students to observe a three-minute silent tribute during the memorial meeting,  according to their specific conditions.
