“Put your make-up on

Get your nails done

Curl your hair

Run the extra mile

Keep it slim

So they like you. Do they like you?”

Do the lyrics ring a bell to you? If not, go and turn the song on before you continuing reading this passage! Here you go, the song “Try”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXoZLPSw8U8.

According to Wikipedia, “Try” was released by Colbie Caillat in 2014, which charted moderately on the US Billboard Hot 100, while becoming Caillat’s highest-charting single in five years in Australia and Canada. It also became a top 40 hit in Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

This song is so popular and well known all over the world that it charted on the Billboard Hot 100, which is the music industry standard record chart in the US for songs. Published weekly by Billboard magazine, the rankings are based on sales in physical and digital, radio play, and online streaming in the US, Wikipedia points out.

In my perspective, this song is famous not only because of its fascinating melody, but mostly because of its lyrics, which remind girls not to try to be someone else to make others happy. Not only girls, but boys, everyone likes to make a difference just because they want people to praise them, engaging in extreme actions to make a change that overwhelms them.

When I first listened to the song, I was so attracted by its lyrics that I could not forget them. I was a girl trying to make a difference so that everyone liked me. I dyed my hair, wore make-up, bought luxuries, and went on a diet. But eventually, when I looked in the mirror, I could not recognise myself. I worked so hard to make everyone like me, but that person was not truly what I wanted, this was not me.

Nowadays, people always pursue the blind beauty of big eyes, a V-shaped face, a nose with a high bridge, slenderness…and double eyelids, but they forget that the most important thing that reveals their true nature is their personality including their mind and character. Outer beauty is like the wrapping of a gift, but inner beauty is the main core of the gift.

Don’t only drink a cup of water for a meal, but do eat as well. Don’t spend almost a month of your salary on buying luxuries. Nevertheless, don’t try to make a difference only because you want to draw others’ attention. Do everything for yourself instead of the others. Outer beauty is not the only element that defines beauty, but the inside matters too.

Whenever you have doubts about your appearance, you need to ask yourself, after all those changes, “Do you like you?” We don’t make a difference for others, instead, we should be the one and the only one in charge of our own lives.

“You don’t have to try so hard

You don’t have to give it all away

You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up

You don’t have to change a single thing”
