Macau’s Novel Response and Coordination Centre announced in a statement in the early hours of this morning that the city recorded its seventh’s COVID-19 fatality yesterday, an 80-year-old unvaccinated woman inflicted with a string of chronic diseases.

The case raised Macau’s COVID-19 death toll to seven.

According to the statement, the woman was transferred to the community treatment centre at the Macau East Asian Games Dome in Cotai for assessment and treatment yesterday morning after testing positive for COVID-19 in a nucleic acid test (NAT) on Monday.

Upon arrival at the East Asian Games Dome, the statement said, the woman suffered decreased consciousness and hypoglycaemia. The statement said that the woman’s condition had improved after treatment, after which she was transferred to the Health Bureau’s (SSM) Public Health Clinical Centre in Coloane for further treatment.

However, the statement said, health workers confirmed at 7:20 p.m. yesterday that the woman was not breathing, and they were unable to detect her heartbeat. Consequently, the health workers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on her, the statement said, adding that she was pronounced dead at 7:54 p.m. after emergency treatment to save her life had failed.

According to the statement, the woman had suffered hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and valvular heart disease.

The statement also urged senior citizens and those with chronic diseases to get their second COVID-19 booster jab, i.e., the fourth dose, with the aim of lengthening their vaccination protection against the novel coronavirus.

The sixth COVID-19 fatality was reported on July 21 this year, when Macau was hit by its previous COVID-19 outbreak, colloquially known as 618 outbreak in Cantonese, that began on June 18 and started to subside in late July. All the previous six fatalities were reported during the 618 outbreak.
