The 13th Macau International Short Film Festival presented 17 awards to winners last Friday, with “Best Film of the Festival” going to “Neon Phantom” from Brazil, about a deliveryman who dreams of owning a motorcycle, which was directed by Leonardo Martinelli, according to a statement yesterday from the festival’s organisers.

The festival was held from December 1-9 and showcased a total of 128 films and music videos from around the world at the TEATRO CAPITOL cinema on Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva.

Among the awardees, the statement noted, two awards tailored for short films related to Macau – “Best Local Entry” and “Macau Cultural Identity” –were respectively awarded to “For-get” by Jenny Wan (溫珍莉) and “Keep on Rolling” by Tianqi Zhao.

“Last Day Off”, a story about migrants in Macau and how they overcome challenges during the pandemic, directed by Filipino freelance actor Mark Justine Aguillon won the “Audience Award”, according to the statement. Moreover, “Can you hear me”, a local entry directed by Chon Sin Chan and performed by 青原 FIDA, was awarded the “Best Music Video” award.

Several international short films also received awards, while others were recipients of the festival’s “Prestigious Awards”.

The Festival’s Production Manager Menn Chow (周萬生) was quoted by the statement as saying that over 50 hours of films and music videos gave the audience “motion pictures with sound and revealed the latest trends in films”.

Aside from screening sessions, the statement added that the festival presented two sessions of masterclasses, where invited guest speakers shared their experiences in filmmaking, while four sessions of the “Expanded Cinema-Asian Short Films” were also held.
