Jason Chao Teng Hei, a member of the so-called Civil Referendum Organising Committee, slammed the government yesterday for allegedly planning to ban any polls that would be similar to the controversial “civil referendum” held by the committee in 2014.

Addressing a press conference at the New Macau Association (NMA) headquarters, Chao said he had received a letter from the Office for Personal Data Protection (GPDP) on August 26, about a week after the announcement by his group to launch an online vote for residents to choose “nicknames” for Macau’s panda twins.

The GPDP letter, addressed to Chao, accused him of having committed an administrative offence by illegally collecting personal data for the “civil referendum” in 2014.
