Macau’s first dementia medical centre opened yesterday at the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre, coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day. The government-run centre provides diagnosis, treatment and support to dementia patients.

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng unveiled the plate of the centre, which is jointly run by the Health Bureau (SSM) and Social Welfare Bureau (IAS), and declared it open.

Delivering a speech before the unveiling ceremony, Tam said it was estimated that there are some 4,000 people suffering from dementia in Macau, or about 0.6 percent of the population.
