The construction of three main buildings of the public hospital project in Cotai, officially known as Islands Healthcare Complex, has been completed, the government has announced.
“Islands” is the official term for Taipa, Coloane and Cotai together.
The Public Works Bureau (DSOP) announced in a statement on Friday that the construction of the three buildings, which got off the ground in October 2019, had been “smoothly” completed earlier that day.
The three main buildings comprise a general hospital, a logistics support building, and an administration and multi-purpose building.
The whole Cotai hospital project has two phases – six buildings in the first phase and one in the second phase.
The first phase comprises the three main buildings, a nursing college, staff quarters, and a central laboratory building.
Concerning the first phase, the construction of the nursing college was completed in October 2019, while the construction of the staff quarters was completed in September this year.
According to the DSOP website, the construction of the central laboratory building is now slated to be completed in March next year.
Concerning the building in the second phase – a rehabilitation hospital, for the time being the government still does not have a schedule as to when its construction will get off the ground.
The construction of the three main buildings was originally slated to be completed in August this year. According to the DSOP website, their completion had been delayed for a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Friday’s statement said that the construction of the three main buildings was a large-scale project as they have a gross floor area of 276,500 square metres. In addition, the statement said, the project also involved the setting-up of a “complicated” electromechanical system.
According to Friday’s statement, the general hospital, i.e., one of the three main buildings, comprises an outpatient clinic tower and an emergency department tower that are connected to each other by a podium. The statement said that the final “adjustment” and internal renovation work of the emergency department building is now expected to be completed before the end of next month.
Friday’s statement noted that after the completion of the central laboratory building project in the first half of next year, the whole first phase of the Cotai hospital complex will then be completed.
The government has indicated that the Islands Healthcare Complex will start operating in phases next year.
