China Telecom (Macau) Company Limited started its 5G service in the city on Friday last week.
Two telecom operators, CTM and China Telecom (Macau), were each granted a 5G licence by the local government in early November. CTM already commenced its 5G service on November 14.
China Telecom (Macau) held a ceremony on Friday last week at a branch near the Barrier Gate checkpoint to mark the launch of its 5G service in Macau.
The government launched a public tender earlier this year for the granting of up to four 5G licences. However, the government had only received two bids before the tender’s submission deadline, from CTM and China Telecom (Macau). Both are among the city’s current four telecom operators that are running 4G services.
The two 5G licences, CTM and China Telecom (Macau), have a duration of eight years.
Speaking to reporters during last Friday’s launch ceremony, China Telecom (Macau) representatives said that the unit price, i.e., price per unit in terms of data usage, of the company’s 5G service is lower than its 4G service.
