The Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement on Friday that people infected with COVID-19 can donate blood 14 days after symptoms have subsided or the last positive nucleic acid test (NAT) or rapid antigen test (RAT) results of the novel coronavirus.

The statement underlined that inactivated COVID-19 vaccines nor Germany’s BioNTech mRNA jabs affect blood donation.

Although there is no evidence that the novel coronavirus can be transmitted through blood transfusion, the statement said, in order to ensure blood safety in Macau, donors are urged to notify the blood donation centre immediately on 2828 6699 during office hours, or 2875 2521 during non-office hours if they are confirmed infected with COVID-19 within two weeks after their donation, or if they develop symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, muscle soreness, or diarrhoea.

According to the statement, as the number of blood donors at the local blood donation centre, which is located on the second floor of Hotline Centre in Nape, has decreased significantly, in order to ensure patients’ demand for local blood transfusion services and maintain the stability of the city’s blood supply, the blood donation centre needs more support from residents taking the initiative to donate blood.

The statement stressed that the blood donation centre has taken a raft of preventive measures, such as periodic disinfection and cleaning of service delivery sites, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Residents interested in donating blood can make an appointment in advance on the blood donation centre’s website: https://www.ssm.gov.mo/cts/blook-ser/preson-make.
