The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) announced a raft of activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year (CNY) with residents and visitors alike.
According to an MGTO statement yesterday, on the first day of the CNY, January 22, MGTO will hold a Golden Dragon parade to welcome the lunar new year. During the event, the statement added, Caishen (God of Wealth – 財神), the gods of the three stars – Fuk (Good Luck), Luk (Happiness), and Sau (Long Life) (福祿壽), the Rabbit zodiac (兔生肖), the Golden Boy and Jade Girl (金童玉女), MGTO mascot “Mak Mak” and the Dragon and Lion Dance will travel through Macau to pay Lunar New Year greetings to residents and tourists.
Through the rabbit’s image of agility, intelligence, activity, luck, and love of challenge, this year’s float show will take “Year of the Rabbit” as the theme to convey the meaning of promoting the diversified development of Macau’s industries, boosting economic vitality, prosperity and healthy tourism, the statement said, which added that the “Rabbit Jump Happy Chinese New Year 2023 Float Show” will be held on the third and the seventh days of the CNY, on January 24 and January 28, in the city centre and the northern district respectively, with the opening performance taking place at 8 p.m. on January 24 followed by a float parade and artistic performance.
The seventh day of the CNY is known as Everyone’s Birthday (“Renri” –人日 – aka “People’s Day”).
In addition, according to the statement, two 15-minute firework displays are slated for January 24 and 28 at 9:45 p.m. off Macau Tower to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The statement added that a firework display will also take place at 9 p.m. on the Lantern Festival on February 5 to create a memorable CNY holiday.
The floats participating in the performance will be exhibited at the Macau Science Museum in Nape from January 25-27 and in Praça do Tap Seac from January 29 to February 12 for everyone to admire.
