Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said in a regular conference on Monday that two men from the mainland have been separately arrested for their involvement in two counterfeit money deception cases.
Chan identified the suspect in the first case as a 24-year-old man surnamed Wang. He told the police that he’s a real estate agent.
According to Chan, Wang and his accomplice struck a deal with a female tourist on Friday in a Cotai hotel lobby, according to which she was to transfer 90,500 yuan (107,400 patacas) to Wang, while the scammers were to hand HK$100,000 in cash to the victim in return. After Wang and his friend handed her the money, they immediately left the scene.
The victim grew suspicious and soon intercepted Wang at the scene with the assistance of hotel security guards, while his accomplice took flight. The police who arrived at the scene later on discovered that besides the top and the bottom of the stack of notes handed to the victim, all of the other notes were counterfeits. Chan added that Wang was carrying 204 fake HK$1000-notes when he was arrested.
Meanwhile, Chan identified the suspect in the second case as a 36-year-old man surnamed Wu. He told the police that he’s a hairdresser.
According to Chan, after Wu and a mainlander struck a currency exchange deal in a hotel guestroom in Zape, Wu handed 500 HK$1,000 notes to the victim who saw that all the of the notes were printed with the name of a certain Hong Kong film-production company. The victim immediately reported the incident to the police.
Both Wang and Wu told the police that they were hired by some people from the mainland to carry out the swindle in Macau.
Wang and Wu have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office, facing fraud charges, Chan said.
