A Judiciary Police (PJ)  statement last night said that PJ officers were notified by the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre at 8:20 p.m. yesterday that a man, who had been admitted to the hospital after attempting suicide by drinking detergent, was later certified dead.

According to the statement, the 90-year-old victim originally from Hong Kong, surnamed Lo, lived in a flat in Taipa with his family.

The statement noted that at about 5 a.m. yesterday, his family members heard some coughing noises in the bathroom and went to check, only to find Lo lying on the floor and telling them that he had consumed detergent.

According to a preliminary examination of the body, no suspicious or criminal injuries were found on the deceased, the statement said.

No suicide note was found at the scene, the statement added. However, the family members told the police that Lo had had suicidal thoughts due to an illness.

The case has preliminarily been classified as a dead-body-found case.

The exact cause of death could only be confirmed by forensic examination, the statement pointed out.
