The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday that it will be launching a new programme titled “Unforgettable melodies in St. Dominic’s Church”, which will have the Macao Orchestra, the Macao Chinese Orchestra, local musicians and groups performing classic tunes at the church known in Portuguese as São Domingos and in Cantonese as “Muihgwai Tong” (“Rose Church”).

The statement noted that the church, which is located near the city’s main square, Largo do Senado, and is also known as the “Church of Our Lady of the Rosary”, is famous for its Baroque architectural style and is also an important part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Historic Centre of Macao”.

The performances will be held every Friday night starting this week through February 17, according to the statement, adding that the performances will enable audiences to “feel the unique charm of music in the atmosphere of World Heritage historical buildings”.

The first concert of the programme will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow, featuring performances of Chinese and Western classics by the Macao Chinese Orchestra, lasting for around an hour.

Through the integration of historic buildings and music arts, the statement said that the bureau hopes to invigorate the city’s cultural atmosphere. They also hope to “leverage the linkage effect of culture and tourism”.

Tickets will be sold from today at the Macau Ticketing Network for 150 patacas and are available at various discounts. Details on other concerts to be announced in due course.
