The Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) will host the Coco Zhao Jazz Concert at its Grand Auditorium next month, while a contemporary dance performance titled “Track” created by renowned  mainland Chinese choreographer Hou Ying is set to be held in March, according to the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).

Slated for February 25, the statement noted that Coco Zhao (趙可) and his six-piece band will aim to recreate the atmospheres of the 1920s Shanghainese cabarets and “American speakeasies of the prohibition days”. There will offer a “mix of popular standards intertwined with Chinese jazz classics”.

Zhao, who according to the statement has been described as “China’s most creative voice”, cemented his reputation as a vocalist, composer and showman throughout the 1990s and received invitations to play at world-renowned music festivals. The statement added that he also earnt the Rockefeller Foundation grant for an artistic residency between New York and New Orleans for his skills, the statement said.

CCM will host also a singing workshop by Zhao on February 23, where he will help local singers explore rhythmic jazz articulation and vocal improvisation, the statement added.

Meanwhile, Hou Ying Dance Theatre’s “Track” will be “bursting with intense movement, emotional rawness and alluring visuals”, featuring video projections and stage installations in a contemporary setting, the statement said.

The statement added that Hou’s company comprises technically and physically skilled dancers. Hou has been described by Beijing cultural critics as “the Kafka of dance” and is an award-winning performer and choreographer recognised in the mainland and the US. She has also danced with New York’s avant-garde dance company Shen Wei Dance Arts for some years.

Hou will also host a workshop on March 7-8 to share the “concepts of language movement and choreographic techniques”.

Tickets for the performances will be sold from Sunday at CCM’s box office and Macau Ticketing Network outlets, with various discounts available. Attendees must wear a facemask when attending indoor performances.
