22 newbies among local members for 14th CPPCC

A total of 38 people from Macau have been appointed as members of the upcoming 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), one person more than in the current 13th CPPCC National Committee.

Among the 38 members, 22 are newcomers who have been newly appointed, while the remaining 16 have been reappointed.

Xinhua yesterday published the full list of 2,172 members of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, which was approved at the 25th session of the Standing Committee of the 13th CPPCC National Committee on Tuesday.

The new five-year term of the CPPCC National Committee will start in March.

The 38 CPPCC National Committee members from Macau comprise 29 members “invited from Macau” and nine members who belong to other sectors such as business, education, journalism and publication, health, and social services

The Macau Special Administrative Region’s (MSAR) first chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, a vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, is among the reappointed members.

The 22 newly appointed CPPCC National Committee members from Macau include Macau Health Bureau (SSM) Director Alvis Lo Iek Long, and Ho Hoi Kei, the daughter of Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng.

The 22 newly appointed members also include six Macau lawmakers, namely Iau Teng Pio (appointed), Ip Sio Kai (indirectly-elected), Kou Kam Fai (appointed), Lam Lon Wai (indirectly-elected), Wang Sai Man (indirectly-elected), and Wong Kit Cheng (directly-elected).

The 22 newly appointed members also include Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) President Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan, businessman Frederico Ma Chi Ngai, and Huang Liuquan, a deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR).

The 22 newcomers also include two media workers, Lo Song Man, a senior executive of public broadcaster TDM, and Choi Chi Tou, the chief editor of local Chinese-language daily Macao Daily News, Macau’s top-selling newspaper.

The remaining nine members among the 22 newcomers are Chan Wa Keong, Chen Ji Min, Choy Meng Vai, Francisco Ho Ka Lon, Lee Chong Cheng, Li Pengbin, Mok Chi Wai, Ng Si Fong, and Un Kin Kuan.

The 21 members from Macau in the current 13th CPPCC National Committee who were not reappointed include former secretary for social affairs and culture Cheong U, Leong Lai, a former director of the now-defunct Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ), and Tina Ho Teng Iat, the sister of Ho Iat Seng.

The 21 members who were not reappointed also include prominent businessmen David Chow Kam Fai, Liu Chak Wan, and Ma Iao Lai.

The 21 members not reappointed also include indirectly-elected lawmaker Vong Hin Fai, as well as former legislator Chan Hong.

The not-reappointed members also include Eddie Wong Yue Kai, an architect by profession, and Ung Pui Kun, who heads the private Kiang Wu Hospital.

In addition, prominent property developer Sio Tak Hong, who is one of the defendants in a graft trial, was also not reappointed to the CPPCC National Committee.

In addition to Edmund Ho, the 16 members who were reappointed include prominent businessman and former lawmaker Chan Meng Kam, as well as lawyer and former legislator Leonel Alves.

The 16 members reappointed also include businessman Chui Sai Cheong, who is the vice-president of the Macau Legislative Assembly (AL) and the elder brother of former chief executive Fernando Chui Sai On.

Other reappointed members include Macau Foundation (FM) President Wu Zhiliang, indirectly-elected lawmaker Alan Ho Ion Sang, gaming executive Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, and O Lam, a vice-president of the Macau Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM).

The CPPCC National Committee is the central government’s top national advisory body. Its members come from the nation’s four different jurisdictions – mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
