A man from the mainland was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of cheating four pawnshops out of HK$138,000 with four fake watches, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at the press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Shan who is in his sixties told the police that he’s jobless.
According to Ho, four pawnshop owners reported to the police separately between December 2020 and January 2021 that a man had deceived their respective staff members with “replicas” of a branded deluxe watch and pawned it. They reported a total loss of HK$138,000.
Shan was arrested when he was entering Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Thursday. Under questioning, he admitted defrauding the pawnshops and told the police that he had bought the four fake watches in Guangzhou for 1,000 yuan (1,190 patacas) each. Shan claimed that he had already spent all the ill-gotten money on his daily expenses.
Shan was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Friday, facing fraud charges, Ho said.
