A woman was arrested on Monday for stealing HK$68,000 from a man who she shared a hotel guestroom with, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a special press conference yesterday.

Ho said that the 31-year-old suspect, surnamed Han, is a beautician from the mainland. The victim is a businessman from the mainland in his thirties.

According to Ho, the victim met up with Han in Gongbei on Friday where the two agreed to travel to Macau and stay together in a hotel guestroom in Cotai on Sunday. The two had met before when gambling in a local casino.

At 8 a.m. on Monday morning, the victim went out to gamble, and when he returned to the room at 11 a.m., he discovered that the HK$68,000 he had put in the room’s safe had vanished, after which he reported the case to the police. The victim said that he had not locked the safe.

Ho said that Han was intercepted in the hotel at 12:30 p.m. She admitted taking the money and transferring HK$60,000 to her WeChat account. Police officers seized the remaining HK$8,000 in cash from her.

Han claimed that the HK$68,000 was payment for her “escort service”.

Han was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a theft charge, Ho said.
