Postgraduate student Huang Hongliang from the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology’s (FST) Department of Mathematics recently won the first prize at the ‘Huawei Cup – the 19th China Postgraduate Mathematical Contest in Modelling’, the public university said in a statement on Tuesday.

The contest, the statement noted, drew a total of 17,970 teams from over 400 universities and research institutes worldwide.

The statement said that each team had three members, with Huang being the leader of his team, which also consisted of two university students from Macau. He is supervised by UM Department of Mathematics Professor Lei Siu Long, who is among the department’s professors who have been encouraging students to join mathematical modelling competitions, as well as offering “pre-competition counselling”.

The teams were required to answer questions and submit papers within a limited period time, demonstrating their ability to solve practical problems by building mathematical models and using information technology (IT), the statement added.

Huang’s team won first prize after a two-month assessment by the judging panel.

The contest, according to the statement, emphasises “cutting-edge and practical problems in various disciplines”. It was first held in 2003 and aims to “encourage team spirit and a creative mindset among postgraduate students, promote talent development in science and technology, facilitate the development of postgraduate education, and strengthen exchange and cooperation between universities and enterprises”.
