A Hong Kong university lecturer has been arrested after he falsely reported to police that his backpack had been stolen by a man when he was taking a rest in Largo de Monte Carlo in the wee hours of Sunday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheuk Kou Chi said at a press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Chen is in his thirties.
After the police received Chen’s report, they began scrutinising their CCTV citywide camera system but could neither see Chen nor the purported thief in the footage.
Under questioning, Chen admitted lying to the police, adding that he “could not explain” his action.
Chen has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of filing a false police report, Cheuk said.
