The Macao Post and Telecommunication Bureau (CTT) alerted residents yesterday about phone calls purporting to be from CTT staff.
According to a CTT statement, the bureau has been informed that some residents received phone calls from someone pretending to be CTT staff members who claimed that fraudulent messages were suspected of being sent from their mainland telephone number and that, at the request of the mainland police, the residents were asked to cooperate with the “investigations”.
The statement underlined that this is a new form of scam, following phone calls also purporting to be from CTT which ask residents to “pick up postal items”.
The bureau clarified that it has never made such calls to residents and warned the public to beware of all forms of scams.
The statement also said that if they receive any such calls, residents should be vigilant and not believe the caller, nor follow the instructions received or provide personal information, in order to avoid being scammed.
According to the statement, residents who have doubts about calls that they receive can call the fraud prevention hotline on 8800 7777 or crime report hotline 993.
