The Judiciary Police (PJ) were notified by the Public Security Police (PSP) and the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre at about 9 a.m. yesterday that a 65-year-old man, who had been rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, was certified dead after “falling” from his flat onto the open-air carpark of a building on Rua Nova da Areia Preta, PJ spokesman Leng Kam Lon said in a statement.

According to the statement, the local victim, who suffered from a chronic illness, lived with his family in the flat. The statement added that all his family members had gone out yesterday morning but the victim stayed at home.

The statement pointed out that PSP officers, who rushed to the flat upon receiving the call at 8:34 a.m. yesterday, found the victim lying in the carpark.

The statement said that after entering the victim’s flat for investigation, PJ officers found that the flat’s door lock was not damaged, and there were no signs of fighting or burglary at the scene. However, the statement added, the flat’s balcony cage door was half-open. The statement pointed out that the balcony was situated over the exact place where the victim was found, so PJ officers believed that the victim “fell” from the balcony to the carpark.

A preliminary examination of the body showed that the victim suffered from fractures to his left arm and leg, which was consistent with “a fall from a height”, according to the statement, which added that there were no suspected criminal injuries on the body.

The exact cause of death would be confirmed after a forensic examination, the statement said, adding that the case was listed as a dead body found.
