A local woman has been arrested for taking a person’s mobile phone that she had found in the street, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Lai said that the suspect in her sixties is surnamed Wong. She told the police she’s jobless.

Lai said that in the morning of January 16, a woman reported to the police that she  had lost her phone worth 10,000 patacas in Rua da Bacia Sul. When the victim returned almost immediately to look for the phone, it was gone.

According to Lai, after scrutinising their CCTV citywide camera system, the police identified Wong as the person who had picked up the phone. Wong was called to a police station for questioning last Tuesday. She admitted stealing the phone out of greed, and claimed that she had thrown the phone away as she was unable to use it.

Wong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft-by-finding charge, according to Lai.
