The Personal Data Protection Office (GPDP) announced in a statement yesterday that it has fined 12 offenders for the illegal use of personal data for telemarketing, between February last year and last month.

According to the statement, the fines imposed on the offenders amounted to a total of 215,000 patacas, comprising companies and individuals in and outside Macau.

The statement also said that some of the cases committed by the offenders also involved criminal offences, adding that the cases have meanwhile been transferred to the Judiciary Police (PJ) for follow-up investigation.

The statement also admitted that telemarketing activities that were carried out in a way that disturbed residents often occurred over the past three years.

The statement said that between the beginning of 2020 and the end of last month, GPDP officials launched investigations into 124 cases involving the illegal use of personal data for telemarketing.
