A local woman has been cheated out of over 6,000 patacas in an online scam in which her money was stolen through an e-payment platform after she downloaded a “job application” mobile app, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a regular press conference on Friday.
Ho said that the victim downloaded a mobile app following the instructions of a job advertisement, after which she filled in her personal information on the application.
Ho said that the victim then received an SMS message with a verification code from MPay, a local online payment platform. When the victim confirmed with MPay’s customer service, she was reminded not to disclose the verification code to others.
However, she continued to receive transfer notifications and verification code SMSs from MPay, Ho said
Ho said the victim finally became suspicious and checked her bank account, only to discover that there were several records of value-added e-payment platform and consumer transactions, and 6,000 patacas had vanished from her bank account.
Ho urged the public not to download unknown mobile phone applications.
