A man and a woman, as well as their respective mothers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a sham marriage, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Wong said the male mainland suspect is surnamed Wang, aged 29. He told the police that he’s a businessman. Wang’s 52-year-old mother, surnamed Chong, is a local accountant. The third local suspect surnamed Kat, aged 22, told the police that she’s jobless. Kat’s mother, surnamed Chan, is a 41-year-old local cleaner.

According to the statement, the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) referred a suspected sham marriage case recently to the Public Security Police for follow-up investigation.  PSP officers discovered that Wang and Kat married in August 2019 but had been living separately. The quartet were taken to a police station for questioning last Monday.

The suspects told the police that Wang had given around 40,000 yuan (46,500 patacas) to Kat’s family, who were in dire straits at that time, in 2017. Police officers assume that they engaged in the bogus marriage with the arrangement of their mothers, but all of them denied the accusation except Kat who admitted to the wrongdoing.

Wong added that Kat has a boyfriend while Wang’s girlfriend broke up with him a year ago.

The quartet have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing document forgery charges, according to Wong.
