A local man was arrested on Friday for stealing a crash helmet left on a motorcycle, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Wong identified the suspect as a 62-year-old man surnamed Chan. He told the police that he’s jobless.
According to Wong, the police received a report from a resident on February 17 that her crash helmet, worth around 800 patacas, had been stolen. The victim said that she had left the helmet buckled to the strap on the seat of her motorcycle, which was parked in Rua Marginal do Canal das Hortas, and when she returned later that day the helmet’s strap had been cut and the helmet was gone.
After checking the citywide CCTV surveillance system, the police identified Chan as the suspected thief and called him to a police station for questioning on Friday.
Chan admitted to stealing the helmet out of greed, saying that he cut the strap with a box cutter.
Chan has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, Wong said.
