The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday that they have recently received a number of reports from residents having fallen for a scam involving the purchase of concert tickets on the internet or via social media, urging the public to be wary of online concert ticket trading fraud.

According to the statement, scammers told the victims that they could resell them concert tickets that had been registered in the scammers’ real name on the concert organisers’ official website, requesting full payment in advance before changing the registered name to the victims’ names. However, after the payment was made, the statement added, the scammers sent a bogus screenshot with an image of tickets to the victims, requesting they to transfer money again on the grounds that they did not fill in the “ticket remarks”, “remarks failed” or “did not fill in the remarks as instructed” during the transfer.

The Judiciary Police urged members of the public to carefully assess the risks and beware of online-shopping traps when making any transactions or ordering services through the internet or mobile apps, underlining that they should not give credence to the identity or matters claimed by an unknown person, preventing scammers from taking advantage of them.

The statement stressed that in order to reduce the risk of fraud, online concert tickets should always be purchased from the organisers or authorised sellers via reputable online sales platforms or their physical outlets. The statement added that those planning to buy tickets online should avoid the “pay first, pick up later” approach, while always keeping relevant chat and bank transfer records after payment.

Anyone suspecting that they have been cheated or been affected by other crimes should immediately call the crime report hotline on 993.
